Education
ECO has held several competitions for Primary age pupils to write a poem of their choice to do with animal welfare or the environment. We have been delighted to receive a rich selection of beautiful poems. Here are a few of the poems that were written by Stenness Primary School pupils.
THE SEA
When I think about the sea
I see waves blue and green,
The small ones lap gently on the shore
The big ones loud and mean.

The pebbles near the water
are rough along one side,
The small ones lie lonely
and hot above the tide.

I really like the water hot
but sometimes when it’s cool,
I think I would rather swim
in a swimming pool.

I see ships on the horizon
up and down they go,
Some are very high
and some are very low.

We have lots of creatures in the sea
and wildlife on the shore
But soon with pollution and fishing too much
in time they’ll be no more.

WHAT’S OUT THERE?
The clouds twist into fascinating shapes,
The gulls dart to and fro, that is before they
are swallowed by the fast flowing sea
mist.

What’s out there in the calmer waters,
The shapeless shadow appears,
Then the whale jumps,
It’s back in the sea as fast as a startled
rabbit.

The sea laps against the hull,
Greeny-blue waters swirl about the homes
of the biggest and smallest creatures,
The sea is almost guiding the golden rays
of sun to the darkest corners of the
world.

In the distance the singing of a huge humpback,
Further away the bark of a seal,
Like the bark of a lost dog.

CAPTIVE
The killer whale
lives in the cold hearted man’s world
He hears the call of the wild
He eats the fish caught for him
but tastes nothing
Day after day he jumps through hoops
Day after day he is ridden
Day after day he entertains
Day after day people laugh
Greed takes over
People become richer
The whale’s spirit fades

If only he could be free.

I CAN…
I can hear the waves
Crashing violently against the tall cliffs.
I can see a tall ship with white sails
Being tossed around on the wild waves.

I can taste the salt sea on my lips
When I lick them.

I can smell the rotten seaweed
Lying on the sand.

Rough splintery wood I can feel
When I go to collect driftwood after the storm.

GUN SHOT!
Here I am, flying above the world,
The houses down below are as small as dolls’ houses,
The green fields like a table cloth,
With the cattle, so small you can barely see them.

Swooping low, everything suddenly getting bigger,
I feel a shudder go up my leg as I land,
All of us feel weak from our long journey,
Falling over now and then as we walk towards the stream.

But as I get nearer to the stream I smell danger, I smell MAN !,
Then “BANG!” We try to take off as quick as we can,
But in the rush some fly into power lines and I see the terrible sight of
them fall,
A Taste of hatred fills my soul, death hangs in the air.

As I fly I see a green field, I check for any sign of men,
As I look I see two dead crows hanging on the fence,
Obviously we are not welcome here, but I see some young ones swoop,
We shout after them but they don’t hear and land, then that dreadful noise
again,
“BANG” none of them drop, it was a blank the farmer fired.

We fly away from that village extremely tired and unrested,
All of us need a rest, but we don’t seem to be welcome,
I look for a place to land, I see a large flooded field,
We swoop down to land, the water’s fresh and no sign of man,
At last we are safe!

The Swallowing sea
I skim smooth stones across the water
I walk along the beach to find more stones.
The whistling wind throws up the sea.
The sea transforms slowly, slowly from calm to wild.
I hear, I see the rampaging sea smash like
glass against the high, hard cliffs.
The waves wash up on the beach like drift
wood slowly getting closer every time.
Then I leave the beach.
I watch it being swallowed by the sea until I can see the beach no
longer.

IN THE FUTURE
In the future the sea will be black with pollution.
Cities will spread over the land like a spider spinning its web.
Even the moon will have cities spreading over it and pollution
destroying it.
People dying suffering the effects of pollution.
In the future all the animals will be extinct
There will be chemically made meat.
Only humans will be alive
to destroy the world and the future.

It’s our future
People could stop the pollution now !
Stop the dumping !
Stop the waste !
Stop killing animals !
Help the world,
Recycle what you can
Help the animals and habitats.
Do what you can to save the environment.
It’s your choice !

LIFE FOR MONEY
I swim in the murky sea
I look up and gasp in disgust
All my life
I have been diving and swimming
To capture the hidden life
Never have I seen such a horrible sight
Pollution being dumped in the sea
I swam up to see who and why they were
doing such a horrible deed
I saw a boat and people throwing
garbage overboard
Killing life just for money.
